Theatr Iolo’s Artistic Director to direct new show by disabled-led theatre company Graeae, at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Self-Raising is a true-life story about growing up Deaf in a family with a secret. Award-winning Artistic Director of disabled-led Theatre Company, Graeae, Jenny Sealey has spent a lifetime championing stories by Deaf and disabled artists. Now, she is ready to share her experience with an audience in Self-Raising, a blisteringly honest, reflective, and often laugh-out-loud funny one-woman show.

Self-Raising is presented by Graeae in association with Soho Theatre and Theatr Iolo, and was developed with The Incubator at The Egg, Theatre Royal Bath. The show is written by Mike Kenny and Jenny Sealey, performed by Jenny Sealey, and directed by Theatr Iolo’s Artistic Director Lee Lyford.

Jenny says –

“It is a huge privilege to perform on stage after years of being the director. I am nervous and excited. Thank you to Graeae, Theatr Iolo and Soho Theatre for this opportunity to take the audience on a journey through my story, which is one many can relate to.”

Lee says –

“I feel hugely honoured to be directing Jenny in this new, and very personal, story she is bringing to the stage. Theatr Iolo are thrilled to be collaborating with Graeae Theatre Company and to have the opportunity to be part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.”

Self-Raising will be at The Pleasance Dome (Queen Dome) from 2 – 27 August as part of Edinburgh Festival Fringe. All performances will creatively integrate BSL, AD and Captions. Age guidance: 14+
