What is Platfform

Beth yw Platfform

Nurturing the Artists of Tomorrow for the Audiences of Today

“Platfform has been invaluable to our development as theatre-makers. It has empowered us through training, opportunities to experiment and enabled us to create our first full-length performance for young audiences”
Paul Harris and Tracy Jenkins, Platfform artists, writer and director

Platfform is a three-year pilot residency programme aimed at supporting emerging artists from across the performing arts interested in making theatre for babies, children, young people and  families.

Emerging devisers, directors, writers, musicians, poets, spoken word artists, game-makers, puppeteers, story-tellers, comedians, creative partnerships, live artists - you name it. And by emerging we mean artists at the beginning of their careers and showing real promise, with a couple of projects under their belts or mid-career / more established artists emerging into a young people’s market for the first time through Platfform.

Through Platfform we will pair emerging artists and organisations working across these art forms with partner venues and organisations across Wales to create theatre that speaks to young people and families and is exciting, collaborative and original.

Through this project Theatr Iolo aims to inspire young people, support and nurture artists interested in making interesting and high quality theatre for young and family audiences and encourage audiences to feel connected to their local arts venue. We want to explore and create a model of best practice through exploring new ways of working that brings together artists, venues and audiences.

What Might Happen During a Platfform Residency?

Artists are selected through open call-out, which will usually take place once a year. The chosen artists will then be partnered with a venue, which will become their home over the next few months. Residencies take place over a number of months, which will include planning, research and creative delivery. During this time selected artists will work on a number of creative projects and happenings with children, young people and their families, wider communities, schools and colleges, venue partners and other partner organisations from across the arts and beyond. Platfform is a development programme which means the focus is on research and development and testing ideas as opposed to delivering a finished piece of work. Artists will work closely with the Associate Producer and will receive a bespoke and flexible package of support which includes:

  • Time, support and space to test, play with ideas, develop, explore, create;

  • Space and support from their partner venue over the residency to develop, explore and deliver their ideas and programme of activity;

  • Support from the Associate Producer to realise their ideas and make links with the community, as well as technical, administrative and marketing support

  • Access to a bespoke package of training and go & see visits to be agreed with the Associate Producer

  • Mentor support from within the company and industry practitioners

  • A daily rate adhering to industry standards

  • A project budget to be managed with the Associate Producer. This will be set on a project-by-project basis

If you are interested in applying for one of the venue residencies please make sure you now read the Artist Call-Out tab. The deadline for applications for the latest round is Friday 11th August at midday

Platfform is made possible with generous support from Arts Council Wales and The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
